Supporting Nomad Communities in Morocco's Sahara Desert
In Amazigh (Berber) culture, three pillars define identity: Awal (language), Akkal (land), and Ddam (family and blood ties). Ddam represents more than just family—it embodies the deep bonds of kinship, solidarity, and the sacred responsibility to help one another throughout Morocco's desert communities.
This value of mutual support is expressed through Twiza—an ancient Amazigh tradition meaning "cooperation" or "mutual aid." For centuries, Twiza brought Moroccan communities together for collective work like harvests and house-building, and extended to supporting families in need. Today, Twiza has become the foundation of Morocco's social structure, shaping how Moroccans support one another across the Sahara and beyond.
Helping others isn't just kindness in Moroccan culture—it's a fundamental way of life. Salem built Arawan Luxury Desert Camp in Erg Lihoudi not only to share authentic Amazigh hospitality but to actively support the local nomad families who call the M'hamid desert region home.
Sustainable Tourism Through Community Support:
Donate Gently Used Items: Practice responsible travel by bringing clothing, shoes, accessories, or other gently used items to leave at our Sahara desert camp. These donations go directly to nomadic Amazigh families in the M'hamid area.
School Supplies for Morocco's Desert Children: We collect notebooks, pens, pencils, backpacks, and educational materials for local schools serving nomad children in the Erg Lihoudi region.
Cash Donations for Moroccan Families: All monetary donations support families in immediate need—medical expenses, emergency support, or basic necessities in this remote Sahara location.
